Rennard Strickland

Dean and Philip H. Knight Professor of Law at the University of Oregon School of Law. He received his B.A. from Northeastern State College, his J.D. from the University of Virginia, his M.A. from the University of Arkansas, and his S.J.D. from the University of Virginia.

Dean Strickland began his career at the University of Arkansas where he was a graduate teaching fellow. He has also taught at the University of West Florida, St. Mary's University, University of Tulsa (where he subsequently was appointed acting dean of the school of law for one year), University of Washington, and the University of Wisconsin. In 1985, Dean Strickland joined the staff of Southern Illinois University School of Law as dean and professor. From 1990 to 1995, he was the director of the Center for Study of American Indian Law and Policy and professor at the University of Oklahoma. From 1995 to 1997, he served as dean of the Oklahoma City University College of Law.

Dean Strickland, a legal historian of Osage and Cherokee heritage, is active in numerous professional organizations, and he has published widely. He was president of the Association of American Law Schools in 1994, and served on several committies for that organization over the years. He has also been an active member of the American Bar Association since 1974. In February of 1997, Dean Strickland was presented with the ABA "Spirit of Excellence Award" by the ABA Commission of Opportunities for Minorities in the Professsion. Earlier, he was the 1979 recipient of the Society of American Law Teachers (SALT) Award. As chair of the Law School Admissions Council for the 1999-2001 term, Dean Strickland is the first person to have headed both the Association of American Law Schools and the Law School Admissions Council.

An authority on Native American Law, Dean Strickland served as editor in Chief of The Handbook of Federal Indian Law. He is the author or editor of more than thirty books, including Tonto's Revenge. He is a collector of Native American art and a major donor to a number of museums.
